Since November 1989, the School has been directly involved in conducting the activities of the Regional Centre, National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India.
Since the Regional Centre of NAEB, at Jadavpur University, Kolkata has been working on various programmes under the guidelines of the NAEB within its territorial jurisdiction of Bihar, Jharkhand and Sikkim apart from West Bengal, with the broader objectives to facilitate the respective State Forest Departments in planning, execution and monitoring of their different Afforestation and Eco-development activities through its Plan Programmes. Later on in 1996 the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Group of Islands has been included under the jurisdiction of this Regional Centre. For details visit the site http://www.rc-naeb-ju.org. |

A brief history
|
|
|
| |
A Centre for Water Resources Engineering started functioning as an interdisciplinary group in R & D activities in June, 1983 after the appointment of a Professor of Water Resources Engineering. From its formation, the Centre was associated with the Departments of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering and Geological Sciences. It was attached to the Hydraulics and Fluid Engineering specialization of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The Centre was transformed into a School in 1987. It has received recognition from both the UGC, MHRD and AICTE. The School has been offering a “Master of Engineering” course in “Water Resources & Hydraulic Engineering” at Post-graduate level sanctioned by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) with an intake capacity of 18 students (Gate :13 , Sponsored : 5) per year.
The Central Board of Irrigation and Power, Govt. of India, in conjunction with the UGC, has awarded two fellowships since 1993 for in-service engineers to pursue higher studies at the School in the field of Water Resources and Hydro Power Engineering, one at the ME and one at the Ph.D. level.
The School has national & international links with different renounced universities & research organizations as regards to collaborative programme.
The School has already carried out a number of consultancy projects with different Government & public organizations in addition to the research projects in the laboratory as well as field. |

Future plan |
|
| |
|
Strengthening Outreach Programme of Field Research through Application Project on Water Resources in Backward Districts as per National Agenda for poverty alleviation. |
 |
Enhancing Laboratory facilities to cater the need of this region
- Open Channel Hydraulics Laboratory
- State Referral Calibration Laboratory for precision Flow Measuring Devices
- Software Application Laboratory :
- Hydrological Modeling (Surface & sub-surface)
- Water CAD & HAMMER for pipe network and pressure transient flow simulation.
|
| |
Providing more technical services to Industry & service sectors with more high quality equipments and expertise |
 |
Future plan of offering NOVEL PROGRAMME
(a) Part time Master of Engineering (Water Resources & Hydraulic Engineering) Programme
It may not always be possible for practicising Water Engineers & Managers to enroll themselves for a full time 2-year course. However enrolling for a Part time Master of Engineering (Water Resources & Hydraulic Engineering) (six semesters) course would turn out to be useful.
Furthermore, a M.E course in ‘Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering’ is presently being taught at very few Universities/ Institutes in India. Thus an endeavor to enable aspiring candidates to have access to this part time course beyond office hours would be highly successful.
(b) Sand-witched Programme
A programme for conferring M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in association with Interested Research Institutes / Universities may be formulated. This is in line with DAAD exchange programme where the students would carryout a part of the research work in Institutes of repute inside or outside India. The School of Water Resources Engineering already established such partnership with University of Konstanz, University of Stuttgart, Germany; University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands; International Institute of Hydraulic Research, The University of Iowa, USA; The University of Tsukuba, Japan; Nihon University, Japan and Institute for Eco-system Study, Pallanza, Italy by exchanging faculty and research scholars. The SWRE will work with these partner Universities to develop a ME and PhD program to be operated in collaboration with the School. |
| |
Further strengthening Interdisciplinary, interfaculty cooperation
This is an Interdisciplinary programme and at present four Departments (Mechanical, Civil, Chemical and Electrical) under the Faculty of Engg. & Technology, Department of Geology, Faculty of Science and Department of Economics & Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts are associated with the activity (in terms of both teaching and research) of the School. Thus there is an integration of teaching and research potential of different related faculties already existing in the University. This integration will, hopefully, be enhanced in future. |
| |
Further strengthening Institutional cooperation
In order to strengthen its own field of teaching and research and also to make a strong contribution to development of researches, the School has established linkages with a number of State Level, National and International Organizations.
Following collaborators are extending their cooperation in assigning and co guiding real life problems to the M.E. students for their Dissertation work:
- Central Water Commission (CWC)
- India Meteorological Department (IMD)
- Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC)
- River Research Institute (RRI)
- Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)
- Central Coal Limited (CCL)
- National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI)
- Public Health Engineering Department (PHED)
- Development Consultants Ltd. (DCL)
- Winrock International India (WII)
Such institutional cooperation is expected to increase more in future |
